Why Does Nicotine Make You Dizzy

Why Does Nicotine Make You Dizzy

At a glance
  • Dizziness after nicotine usually comes down to your body adjusting, or taking in more than usual
  • New vapers are especially prone to it, often from starting on a stronger strength than they realise
  • Lowering your nicotine strength is one of the most effective fixes
  • Zero Max gives the throat hit without any nicotine at all, if you'd rather remove the cause entirely

Nicotine is a well-known stimulant found in tobacco products — praised by some, criticised by others. One of its less-discussed effects is dizziness. Here's why it happens, and what to do about it.

The science behind it

Nicotine triggers the release of neurotransmitters shortly after entering your body, which can bring on a brief altered state and, with it, dizziness. It also affects blood pressure directly: both a spike and a sudden drop are possible, and the bigger the swing, the more likely you are to feel light-headed. This is part of what's known as a "nicotine rush." Sensitivity varies a lot from person to person, too — some people feel dizzy from a small amount, others barely notice it.

If nicotine is making you feel dizzy, even at a dose you're used to, it's worth cutting down. For smokers, that means smoking less. For vapers, it's simpler — consider using a vape with lower nicotine strength, or switch to nicotine-free e-liquid altogether.

When this tends to happen

If you're new to nicotine, your body simply hasn't adjusted yet. Start at a lower strength and build up gradually if you need to; our Zero Max refill pods are also worth trying if you want the throat hit without any nicotine at all.

Even experienced users can feel it: taking in more than you're used to, or switching to a stronger product, can bring dizziness back even after your body's adjusted once already.

How to avoid it

Start at a lower nicotine strength and build up gradually rather than starting high.

New to vaping? E-liquid nicotine strengths typically range from 0mg (nicotine-free) up to 18mg. Many people start with disposables, not realising most are 20mg — often far higher than their previous intake, which is a common cause of dizziness for new vapers. Our PG vs VG guide is a good next read if you're still finding your way around the basics.

Strength Who it suits
0mg Nicotine-free. Suitable for those just starting out, or cutting back to zero.
3mg Casual smokers (up to 5 a day), or those just starting to vape.
6mg Regular smokers (up to 10 a day), or experienced vapers using a sub-ohm device.
12mg A good starting point if you smoke 10–20 a day.
18mg For heavy smokers — the strongest most premixed e-liquid comes in.
20mg The UK's legal limit, mostly found in disposable vapes.

Already vaping regularly? If dizziness becomes a frequent issue, it's worth reducing your nicotine strength.

Want to keep vaping without the dizziness?

Zero Max gives you the throat hit of a normal vape with zero nicotine — no dizziness, no nicotine rush. It uses prefilled pod refills that slot straight into Puff Box, with 9 flavours to choose from. Prefer some nicotine sometimes? You can swap back to a nicotine pod whenever you like.

Can nicotine-free vapes reduce dizziness?

Yes — with no nicotine, there's no nicotine rush and no related dizziness. Most nicotine-free vapes miss the throat hit people expect, though — Zero Max is built specifically to keep that feeling without the nicotine.
