If you go back as recently as five years ago, very few people in the UK had heard of Black Friday; it was still an American phenomenon. That is rapidly changing and its growth in popularity in the UK has largely been driven by retailers. Imagine their excitement at the creation of a day dedicated to shopping.
This year Black Friday will fall on Friday November 27th. It is the day immediately after Thanksgiving, an American holiday. American retailers normally put out their best deals on this day, with the Saturday and Sunday following being the busiest shopping weekend of the year. It is the Monday after though, now known as Cyber Monday, which is the busiest day for online shopping in the United States. In the UK the busiest online shopping weekend is traditionally the week following on from this, perhaps due to people being paid at the end of month.
Last year UK retailers, both on the high street and online, began to seriously target Black Friday. The media was full of stories of near riots erupting as shoppers fought for bargains. This year it looks like Black Friday will again increase in popularity, with the ensuing chaos that follows it unlikely to be far away. The sensible thing to do would be to look for your Black Friday deals online.
The world’s busiest online shopping day is neither Black Friday or Cyber Monday but is actually Singles’ Day. This is celebrated on November 11th or 11/11, deliberately chosen to represent the link between the number 1 and single people. The tradition was started in the 1990s by students at Nanjing University. Although still celebrated largely inside China, it has grown to become the world’s busiest online shopping day.
